‘Design’ by Robert Frost is a fourteen-line sonnet that is separated into two stanzas. From his Danish upbringing and his design career, my design style emerged and got it’s initial training. Our house always looked amazing when I was a kid, with its mid-century modern decor adding to my subtle design influences.

For instance, the moth is described as “white…stain cloth,” (white is generally a symbol of purity or innocence) in line three of the first stanza, and the following reference to “death and blight”. The poem, presented in its entirety as above, follows the strict structure of a good sonnet.

Frost wants to understand how it’s possible that the world came together so perfectly in order to steer the “white moth thither in the night” so that it might end up in the spider’s mouth. Taken out of context, the sonnet might seem to carry overtones more ominous than the context of Frost’s other poems actually permits. For Frost, the attempt to see clearly, and from all sides, requires a willingness to confront the frightening and the appalling even in its darkest forms. When the fifth line begins, Frost picks up the rhythm of ‘Design,’ making use of alliteration and internal rhyme.
